Australia’s cinema market hit new highs last year, with annual admissions topping 90 million for the first time and box-office takings exceeding A$800 million (about US$416 million).

Industry-wide grosses climbed 17.8% to A$422.3 million, while total admissions reached 92.5 million — a rebound after a 2% slip in 2000 (the first decline since 1987), which had been blamed on the Sydney Olympics and the introduction of a 10% GST.

The average Australian went to the movies almost five times in the year, placing the country among the world’s most frequent cinema audiences.

Exhibitors and distributors welcomed the surge, especially as the pace of new cinema construction has slowed with the market nearing saturation.

Local films also enjoyed a strong showing, taking A$32.9 million and about a 7.8% share of the market, roughly on par with the previous year.

Homegrown standouts included Fox’s Moulin Rouge (A$14.2 million), Palace’s Lantana (A$5.1 million) and BVI’s The Man Who Sued God (A$4.2 million).

On the all-titles list, Shrek was the top earner at A$16.6 million, narrowly beating Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone on A$16.2 million.

Mike Selwyn, chairman of the Motion Picture Distributors Association and managing director of UIP, described the results as encouraging given difficult economic conditions, but warned that rising media costs remain a significant burden for distributors.
